Episode 3 - Big Salon to Suite Salon
LISTEN NOW: ITUNES
Working in a big salon can be great for business, but it also comes with a lot of restrictions.
You may be limited on the days and times you can work, or you might not have control over your schedule.
Moving to a suite salon could be the answer. Suite salons give you more flexibility over your schedule, so you can work when and how you want. Plus, suite salons are more private and give your clients a sense of intimacy.
In Episode 3 of The Chair-apist, I interview Wyatt, my education partner at Kevin Murphy. We discuss his move from a big salon to a suite salon and how it has benefitted his business. Wyatt shares his insights on why the move was beneficial for him and how it has helped him take control of his business.
As an educator at Kevin Murphy, Wyatt wanted to have more control over his schedule that just wasn't available at a big salon. Using his Business Degree, he ran the numbers and figured out that moving to a suite salon was feasible and more profitable.
Run the Numbers
Making the jump from a commission salon to a suite salon can be scary, but if you run the numbers, you might find that it benefits your bottom line to make the move.
Be analytical. Change your mindset from the outlook that the salon is the one paying your bills to one that looks at your clients as the ones who are actually paying your bills. Make a spreadsheet for each of your clients and track the following metrics:
So how often did this person come in?
What's the average amount that they spend on services?
How often do they buy products? And how much do they spend?
Control Your Own Schedule
In addition to growing your bottom line, you can control your own schedule by being your own boss rather than having someone tell you where you need to be and when. This can free you up to pursue continuing education or even become an educator yourself.
Grow Your Clientele
With the advent of COVID, many clients are hyper-aware of being in situations with large crowds. Having a more intimate environment helps clients feel safer and has actually helped to grow Wyatt’s business as they prefer that to being in a big open space.
